SCAD x The Mill
② Week 3
Trail Mix
Feedback from Mentors (Class 5 )
1. Make sure to feature more ingredients in the final version
2. Incorporate motivated lighting, like a campfire or moonlight, to explain the nighttime scene and avoid off-screen light sources, enhancing the composition
3. Reference!
Changes made:
1. Story adjustment: Astronomer Barry, inspired by a trail mix meteor, takes a bite and solves his equation under the glow of Comet Sahale (Original story by John Pearson)
2. Testing HDRI
3. Testing Unreal Engine and Houdini pipelines
Note for this week blog:
- Due to the power outage caused by the hurricane this week, there is not much process in week 3
- “
Week 3 Task - Trail mix piece falling Fx
-
(After discussing with Professor Fowler, we decided to stick with the previous packaging drop idea. The trail mix ball didn’t look very appetizing, and texturing for it later would be too tricky )
- Adjusted the falling direction of the meteor to right-to-left.
- Tweaked gravel, dust, and sand particle effects to match the environment.
- Added a dust effect transitioning into the camera for a smooth virtual-to-real blend.
- Conducted a pyro test for the composite section.

Fx test in Houdini (trail mix piece falling part - RBD)
For this part of the VFX, I’m thinking of trying to add it to the bag drop effect, or maybe make the idea of the product falling from the sky more fun?
